Preparation

Luxembourg International Airport has a class D control zone and a class D terminal area 2500ft MSL and above covering most of the country and extends into Belgium and Germany. ATC is in English. VFR traffic is routed over mandatory reporting points. NORDO and ultralight aircraft are not allowed. To arrive and land at Luxembourg International airport, all necessary charts should be at hand and checked in advance. Handling is mandatory. JET A1 and AVGAS 100 are available. A GA maintenance shop is on the field. The currency in Luxembourg is the EURO.

License Validation

Holders of valid ICAO compliant licenses may fly and land here, provided immigration is cleared depending on the origin. Luxembourg is part of the Schengen agreement.

The Grand Duchy of Luxembourg (Luxembourgish: Groussherzogtum Lëtzebuerg), is a landlocked country in Western Europe, bordered by Belgium, France, and Germany. Luxembourg has a population of around 600.000 people in an area of approximately 2,586 square kilometres (999 sq mi). It is a parliamentary democracy under a constitutional monarchy, ruled by the Grand Duke. It is the world’s only remaining sovereign Grand Duchy.  Founded in 963, Luxembourg became a Grand Duchy in 1815 at the congress of Vienna. The country has a highly developed economy, with the second-highest gross domestic product per capita in the world, according to the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

The national language is Luxembourgish (Lëtzebuergesch), but Luxembourg is a trilingual country characterised by the use and recognition of French, German and  Luxembourgish.

Luxembourg is a founding member of the major multilateral  organisations such as the United Nations, NATO, OECD, the European Union and the Schengen Treaty, reflecting its political consensus in favour of economic, political, and military integration. Luxembourg City, the country’s capital and largest city is the seat of several EU institutions and agencies.

Places to Fly

Luxembourg has its one and only international airport (ELLX) near the capital city of Luxembourg. All facilities are available, landing and handling fees apply. It is busy with passenger and cargo traffic and you must blend in with ATC. The small Noertrange (ELNT) airfield in the north of the small country is a short grass strip and PPR. The Useldange (ELUS) glider field is for based gliders only. Ultralight pilots may arrange to land at the Sterpenich field (EBAR, home of the Arelair Club) near the border in Belgium, as well as at the Zoufftgen field (LF5755, home of Luxembourg’s Aéroplume Club). Both are PPR.
